Operator Spotlight: Daniel from Kapture Booth

It's been awhile but we are back with another instalment of the Operator Spotlight series. Up this time is Daniel Noy owner/operator of Kapture Booth.

Kapture Booth is a Victorian based operator servicing Melbourne, Geelong, Warrnambool, Ballarat, Frankston, Lakes Entrance, Horsham, Bendigo, Morwell, Shepparton, Mildura and Gippsland with their open style and mirror booths.

When was the first time you can remember being in a photo booth?

It would have been roughly back in 2004, when huge bulky enclosed photo booths ruled this earth. I was at an 18th Birthday party and I can vividly remember having so much fun using the booth that night and I guess ever since then I have always been so fascinated with the concept of a photo booth.

Describe what you believe it is about photo booths which makes them so popular?

I believe there is a number of reason’s as to why photo booths are so popular these days, it’s kind of hard to believe that in the modern, convenient times of today where technology such as smart phones with built in cameras, photo booths still exist. But the one thing that really stick’s out to me and probably is a good reason as to why photo booths are more popular than ever;

A photo booth provides a unique experience, one that is not typically present in your usual daily routine and has the versatility to encompass a broad range of users from different generations. It’s a highly social activity and people love seeing their friends and family cram into a photo booth to take some highly hilarious natural photo’s. Not to mention being able to provide a memento to take home and slap up on the fridge as a reminder of their fun experience they had at that event.

How long have you been a "photo boother" and what made you decide to become one?" 

My partner Chloe and I have been running our photo booth business Kapture Booth since December 2016 and it’s been a fantastic journey thus far. The initial idea to start our very own photo booth business was when we were having a heap of fun in the photo booth at a friend’s wedding. I was intoxicated at the time when I asked my Chloe “Wouldn't it be great to capture special moments at event’s like this with a photo booth?” to much surprise at the time Chloe responded, “I’d love to do that”. I guess that’s when the “light bulb” moment hit us, and we thought that it would be a fantastic idea to start up our own photo booth business and here we are today!

What do you believe it is about your photo booth hire business that sets it apart from your local competition?

I guess the secret behind Kapture Booth is somewhat simple, but I’m a true believer of not making things more complicated than what they actually need to be. I’d like to think our core message has been our key ingredient to setting us apart within our local market. We offer photo booth and hashtag printer packages at an affordable price, including everything you would need when hiring a photo booth at no extra cost - No fine print or hidden catches here people!

What are some of the challenges of running a photo booth hire business?

The biggest challenge we have faced since becoming a photo booth operator is finding enough photo booth attendants to help us service all our booking’s, but I guess that’s a good challenge to have. So, if anyone out there looking to have a heap of fun and make some money, get in contact with us. But honestly, we haven’t found too many challenges whilst being in the industry. The one piece of advice I could give to anyone in the industry or thinking about starting would be that you need to be well prepared and planned, know your equipment and what you want to achieve because if you’re not on top of thing’s early it will just eat you up and spit you out. 

Do you have any other involvement in the photo booth industry?

Yes, we do actually! We have literally just launched a business called Backdrop King – Check us out! Backdrop King is a predominately a backdrop brand, offering a huge range of backdrops with the ability to design and create any custom backdrop of your own – The best part is that this service is also at no extra cost over our existing designs. In the coming month’s we will be adding to our range, so keep your eye’s peeled and don’t forget to sign up to our mailing list to keep up to date with our promotions and new products!

What made you want to open up your own photo booth backdrop business and what sets it apart from the others?

We finally decided to open up our backdrop business after a good couple of months pondering the whole idea of starting another business. The idea initially came from us being approached by various people inside and outside the photo booth industry asking us where can they buy/hire our backdrops we use?

As all our backdrops are our own, we ended up working with a couple of customers who approached us and provided them with a couple of custom backdrops to suit their needs. It was at that moment that we saw first-hand how satisfying and rewarding it was to be able to help others grow their own brand (Not to mention one of these customers are one of Kapture Booths local competitors within the industry).

What set's it apart is that it's essentially like great sex: It consists of passion, experimentation, fearlessness, hard work, spontaneity and humour that makes an exceptional product and ultimately a great brand. We’re pretty certain that when we launch a product it can make an impact within the industry by helping others grow, but what we've learnt is that amazing designs and inspiration makes up only about 20-30% of what it is to run a successful business. The other 70-80% are equally important and consists of marketing, logistics, shipping, public relations, advertising, point of sale, quality assurance, consumer service and that’s what sets us apart from the others out there.

Where do you see the photo booth industry (and your involvement in it) going in the future?

With all the amazing people and innovation going on, especially here in Australia I can only see the industry growing and becoming stronger. Some of the guys out there are really pushing the envelope to create some amazing products and service. If we can play a role and help other vendors grow quicker and easier with Backdrop King we would be absolutely delighted!

As for our involvement, we hope to continue to contribute and give back to the community for many years to come, hopefully we can give back as much as it has given us. We have some pretty big plans to expand further and further with Backdrop King, exploring into various categories within the industry so watch this space!
